Ceramacist & Sculptor
After a long and varied career in business, Jayne made a life changing decision to leave the Corporate World behind to fulfil a long held ambition to concentrate more on her art. Graduating in 2015 with a Fine Art (BA) Hons degree she went on to study MA Ceramics at the University for the Creative Arts. After completing a further 3 years of ceramic research and practice Jayne started up her own business, The Studio At Clapham Ltd. Jayne is also a Lecturer in Ceramics at Greater Brighton MET College, University Campus.
Jayne’s own art practice focuses on ceramic sculptures which are organic in form and inspired by nature. Jayne’s inspiration is wide ranging. Be it plant, mineral or animal, land or sea. She is drawn to the treasures the Natural World provides and their increasing fragility.
“I am very fortunate to live where I do, in the beautiful surrounding of the South Downs National Park. I am very conscious of the benefits exposure to our lovely Countryside and the creation of art has on our mental and physical well-being. I endeavour to make this an opportunity that is accessible to everyone”
Jayne uses a combination of ceramic techniques – throwing and altering, coiling, pinching, folding, and slab building to make her sculptures.
Whilst she uses a wide range of firing techniques, her favourite method is pit firing pieces wrapped in seaweed and other plants and minerals foraged locally to finish and glaze her sculptures.
